The Sheathed Woodtuft (Kuehneromyces mutabilis) is a clustered, wood-growing mushroom found throughout the UK. It typically grows on decaying hardwood stumps and fallen logs, appearing in dense groups from spring through autumn. This species is considered edible in some parts of Europe and has been traditionally collected, but it requires very careful identification due to its similarity to highly poisonous species.

The biggest danger with Sheathed Woodtuft is confusion with the Funeral Bell (Galerina marginata), which contains deadly amatoxins. Because both species grow on wood, share brown caps, and may have a ring on the stem, misidentification can have serious consequences. For this reason, many modern foraging guides advise extreme caution or complete avoidance unless identification skills are highly developed. It is not recommended for beginners.

Identification Features:

  • Cap colour honey-brown to amber
  • Cap often darker in the centre and paler at the edge
  • Cap surface smooth and slightly sticky when wet
  • Cap may appear two-toned as it dries
  • Gills are pale at first, becoming cinnamon-brown
  • Gills attached to the stem
  • Stem is slender and brownish
  • Distinct membranous ring (skirt) on the stem
  • Stem below the ring is darker and scaly
  • Stem above the ring is paler and smoother
  • Spore print is brown
  • Grows in dense clusters on hardwood stumps
  • Fruits spring through autumn in the UK

Foraging Safety:

  • Key safety differences from Funeral Bell:
    • Sheathed Woodtuft has a clearer, well-defined ring
    • Stem below ring is dark and scaly
    • Spore print is brown (Funeral Bell is rusty brown)
  • Never rely on:
    • Growth on wood alone
    • Cap colour alone
  • Beginners should avoid:
    • All small brown mushrooms on wood
  • Cooking does NOT make toxic lookalikes safe
  • If any doubt exists:
    • Do not collect
  • If accidental ingestion suspected:
    • Seek urgent medical attention
  • Best practice:
    • Only collect if highly confident
    • When in doubt, leave it out
