Meadow/Field Mushroom (Agaricus campestris)
The Meadow Mushroom, also known as the Field Mushroom, is one of the most common and widely eaten wild mushrooms in the UK. It grows in grassland rather than woodland and is often found in meadows, pastures, lawns and parkland. This species has been collected for centuries and is closely related to the cultivated button mushroom sold in shops. Meadow mushrooms usually appear after rainfall in late summer and autumn and may grow singly or in fairy rings.
Despite being an excellent edible mushroom, the Meadow Mushroom requires careful identification because it shares its habitat with several poisonous lookalikes. Foragers must pay close attention to gill colour, smell and bruising reactions. When correctly identified, Agaricus campestris has a mild, pleasant flavour and firm texture, making it a reliable and rewarding mushroom for beginners who learn the proper safety checks.
